Why I am Blogging

Posted by Victoria Bresee, 1/11/05 at 8:02:22 AM.

The impetus for me to gain these skills to communicate in a new way was what I heard and read about the fall election.  Not so much the results of the election, but the conclusions and judgments that were expressed by other Christians.  There have been quite a few elections I remember as being very disappointing since my first election, but none so troubling.

From the pulpit I heard that although the minister was not going to talk about the election itself, it was obvious which way God wanted us to vote, “against immorality.”  A church official told his sister, my friend, that “Democrats are immoral.”

If we believe in Democracy, we need to continue to have at least two viable parties, otherwise it will become another religious dictatorship.  Christians who felt that God was on their side in the election are using the momentum to introduce more “moral values” legislation.  How long can two parties be maintained, if one sees the other, not as an equally legitimate option, but as immoral?  What happens to the separation of church and state?  The freedom from religious persecution that our country was founded upon?

A major issue in the past election was gay marriage and there continues to be momentum to legally define marriage as the union of a man and a woman, to protect the “sanctity” of marriage.  What business does the government have in determining the “sanctity” of anything?

I am concerned about moral issues, I am concerned about religious liberty and the separation of church and state, and I am concerned about the future of Democracy in America.  I am writing this blog to connect with other “concerned Christians” to provide another voice and to articulate other ways that Christians can view the controversial issues that we will be facing in the next few years.
